E.A. Quirin Machine Shop & Leed Foundry

FOREWORD

E.A. Quirin Machine Shop and Leed Foundry are located in St. Clair, the heart of Pennsylvania's coal region, where the work ethic remains strong.

Both companies enjoy steady growth and have undergone extensive modernization over the last several years. The machine shop moved into its new plant in June of 1987 and the foundry was modernized in 1980 and then expanded in 1987, thus increasing its production from 15 tons to 50 tons per day.

The companies stand side by side, with E.A. Quirin Machine Shop manufacturing steel gratings and Leed Foundry producing construction castings.

Employee participation is the key to our success. Our hourly machine shop employees participated extensively in the workflow layout of their new plant, much of it on their own time. Our hourly foundry workers equally contributed ideas for improving manufacturing techniques and plant safety. All of our employees enjoy a lucrative profit sharing plan that is based not only on quantity but also quality of castings and gratings produced. We are committed to air pollution control and work place safety.

This current catalog is another part of our modernization program. You'll find actual castings photographs, engineering drawings, plus available options. This catalog, however, is only a partial listing; don't hesitate to call if you can't find your particular need.

In closing, we'd like to thank our many fine customers and friends who have shown confidence in us over the years. To those we haven't met, won't you please consider us for your future requirements.

HISTORY

E.A. Quirin Machine Shop originated in 1870 when Peter Quirin, a German immigrant and master mechanic, opened a small machine shop in St. Clair.

As an inventor he patented a miner's safety lamp in 1883. He also patented a nonfreezing hydrant in 1886. His machine shop manufactured the hydrants until 1918, and only family members were permitted to build the patented hydrant.

During this period and until 1950, they performed extensive work for the local coal companies--machining, repairing and manufacturing for their needs. One of the most common items manufactured was iron car wheels for the lokies that were lowered into the mines to bring out the coal.

With the demise of the coal industry, Quirin Machine Shop and Leed Foundry have grown to become one of the East Coast's largest manufacturers of construction castings and gratings.
